Fig ‘Brown Turkey
Ficus carica ‘Brown Turkey
Spreading habit with attractive foliage, silver gray bark becomes ornamentally attractive with maturity. Large, hairy, 3-5 lobed leaves are rough dark green above and smooth light green beneath. Non-showy greenish flowers form in spring inside hollow receptacles near the branch growing tips. The fruit (edible fig) develops within each receptacle. The main fruit crop ripens in late summer or fall on new wood. In some areas, a lesser crop may appear in spring on new wood. Fruit develops without pollination. Prefers organically rich, moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Highly adaptable. Figs are often root hardy and prolific in zones 5 if planted in a sheltered location. Makes a beautiful specimen for garden or landscape with light annual pruning.
